It was a very rainy day. It started early in the morning and was not improving at all.
That day we supposed to met up with a guy who had a piece for our bicycle.
His place was in a surburb we have never visited before, so regardless of weather I was glad to jump in a car and drive there! (I should be honest here as my husband drove and I enjoyed and photoshooting “rainy shots” ;-D).
By the way, I liked that suburb. We need to back there one day to do some photo shooting. It should be plenty of nice little photo gems, as I call them, there.
On the road there we suddenly noticed an airplane right above our heads appearing from nowhere!
It was scary! It was huge and completely unexpected!
On the road back we noticed an airplane again! It appeared right ahead us.
We thought “it should be something in the water”, I’m kidding! We immediately decided to stop somewhere and watch what will happen next.
And you know what? Near the road there was a special place called… “Aircraft Viewing Area”! Wow :) That was cool! Thanks to guys who thought about us, ordinary people eager after unusual things! :-)
There is even an ice-cream van there! And yes, we bough ice-cream even it was raining! It was cool to sit, eat ice-cream and watch airplanes landing right above your head :)
Do you remember that video about a small island? The island is so small that a landing strip is right near the beach line. And people have fun watching planes!
So it’s almost like there, but it’s here, in Melbourne :)
It was very interesting how an airplane appears – first you don’t see anything at all, a moment later a light dot appears near horizon, another moment – and it’s two dots – it’s airplane lights. Seconds later – you see it closer and bigger, Closer and Bigger, CLOSER AND BIGGer, BIGGEr, BIGGER, BIGGERRRRRrrrrrrr …. as a huge bird it flies over you and shows its tail landing in the airport…
In Motion!
It was a rainy day. But it was a nice day! It’s one of that days when you do not expect much but you open for surprised and that moments do not wait to come!

Have you ever seen such airplane landing viewing areas? Are they usual for airports? (Thanks to Melbourne Airport for such a good thing!)
what road was this on? how does one get there??
It’s a good question! I could not find it on a map, but hubby helped me today :)

I updated the post with this info and put a Google Map with a link to get a direction to there. Please have a look, does it help?
Please post once you visited the place! How did you find it? Any photos? It would be interesting to have a look! Thanks :)
Cheers ;-)

You’ll find viewing areas are pretty common at most major airports, whether actually within the airport complex itself or around the perimeter.
I think it’s probably safer to have them designated rather than having people pulling over wherever they can to get a decent photo/look.
Thank you for the comment, Daniel! I did not know it’s quite common for the airports. For a long time I lived in a country where you could have been almost shot for taking pictures within the airport area :), so it was quite a different experience to be able to freely watch the planes at the Melbourne’s airport :)
I agree with you – it’s better to have a designated area for people who want to watch.

Plenty of good spots at Tulla for photography ( subject to wind direction and therefore runway in use ) but almost a total wipe out for videoing aircraft actually leaving the tarmac and touching down again.
Oh, do they use different runways depending on wind? I like the sound of a landing aircraft. They do something with engines so the sound changes all the time. Pity my camera could not catch that well! :) Natalie
Hey Natalie,
